Give a Gift To All of Washington County This Holiday Season: Donate to the Arts!
At the end of the year, we all receive requests from non-profit groups who are seeking donations to support their important work. It can be a difficult decision to make! Which incredibly worthy cause will I donate to this year? With so many worthy causes, if we all gave just a few dollars to each organization…well, we would all go bankrupt! Why should you consider donating to a non-profit arts and culture organization this year? Here is what I think;
First, giving to the arts actually has an impact on wide range of other non-profit causes! According to Involved in Arts, Involved in Life, a study by the National Endowment for the Arts, people who are involved in the arts are significantly more likely to be active as volunteers in their communities. In fact, people who attend live art performances at 2.7 time more likely to volunteer for other social causes than people who do not attend the arts. Your donation to the arts will increase opportunities for your friends and neighbors to participate in the arts and, by extension, encourage them to be involved in the civic and culture lives of the whole community.
Second, unlike many social service organizations, arts and culture organizations receive significantly less funding from government and public sector funders. In fact, when you buy a ticket to a theatre performance, the price of that ticket covers a very small percentage of the costs associated with producing that show. Individual donations are an enormous resource for arts and culture groups, many of whom are not eligible for government grants or assistance.
Third, the arts matter. Arts and culture groups explore the important questions of our time, including issues of profound importance to our colleagues in the non-profit world. Who am I? Where do I fit in my community? Questions of race, gender, sexuality, politics, public policy, medicine, history, social ills, and our future…all of these questions are explored and illuminated by the arts, helping to shape our communal responses and actions about them. The arts connect us to our world in a powerful way, helping to answer and address concerns that impact us all.
Finally, and uniquely in Oregon, your donation to a 501c3 non-profit arts and culture organization makes you eligible for the Oregon Cultural Trust’s tax credit. This is a remarkable and innovative way for you to double the impact of your gift to the arts and culture and is brain-numbingly simple! Once you have donated to an arts group, simply match that donation to the Oregon Cultural Trust and you will receive a 100% tax credit on your state taxes…Basically, you can give twice for one price. More information can be found online at www.oregonculturaltrust.org. You can also find a list of participating arts groups in Washington County at this site to help you determine which non-profit arts group you can make a donation to!
This year, consider making an investment in your community by making a donation to an arts and cultural organization in Washington County.
